Come Down Zacchaeus… You Left Your Goods Behind You.

Jesus and Zacchaeus
19 Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.

5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”

6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man[a] came to seek and save those who are lost.”

I speak, of course, about Zaccheus. Tax gatherer for the Romans, address Jericho. A man working for an occupying force Israelites hated, collecting its taxes while free to extort additional money for personal gain.

When you think of unbelievers you know, I imagine you see some of them as more “open” to the gospel than others. Whether we realize it or not, we often profile people as to their potential for faith. Appearances, careers, affiliations, social habits – these and other factors lead us to make assumptions about people. Zaccheus stands as one of those unlikely converts whose conversion represents the amazing love and mercy of  the people.

1.He had what the world offered—he was rich

As the chief tax gatherer at a key trading intersection like Jericho, Zaccheus had it made. Taxes on the huge amount of goods that flowed through this ancient gateway to all points east, west, north, and south brought much wealth to Rome, and a goodly sum to tax collectors who were allowed to make their living by padding the books. This guy had money, something the world says will fulfill you.

Who do you know is financially wealthy? Yes, it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom, but it can and does happen! Riches will not satisfy, and many who are so blessed are ripe for true riches in Christ Jesus.

2.He recognized his limitations—he was short

He climbed a sycamore tree so he could see Jesus over the crowd. In my view, this portrays Zaccheus as an honest man, willing to endure the indignity of scaling a tree for a look at a man whose message focused on sin, forgiveness and true life. He was no King Saul, who stood a head above everyone else and

For consider your calling that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised.

3.He persisted in his search—he was a true seeker

The text says, “he was trying to see who Jesus was,” a verb in the imperfect tense, denoting a continual process of pursuit. As well, he “ran on ahead” and “climbed into a tree” in order to get a glimpse of the Savior. Here is a man who is not easily dissuaded from his goal—to encounter the Son of God. This is how people act when they are sincere in their quest.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “without faith it is impossible to please [God], for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.” We should look for those whose interest in things eternal continues to surface. We might be looking at a future brother or sister.

4.He freely acknowledged his need—he was a sinner

Because of their complicity with Rome and tendency to extort, Jewish laws (Mishnah) said that it was perfectly permissible to lie to tax collectors to protect ones property. I would imagine many who knew Zaccheus had little trouble identifying him as a sinner.

The great part of this story is that Zaccheus agrees! One gets the impression he is laboring under some guilt, as he offers to give half his wealth to the poor and return four-fold any amount he has fraudulently assessed from others. His spirit is sensitive to the sinfulness within him, something he did not manufacture on his own. This was from the Holy Spirit, whose work is to “convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8).

Only through the conviction of the Spirit will a person submit to Jesus Christ. Thinking there is a certain people profile that suits the Spirit better than another for conviction of sin is tacitly unbiblical and foolish. His love saves all sorts, something we readily see when we look into the mirror. Great is his mercy!

5.He embraced the forgiveness of Christ—he was sincere

Zaccheus’ heart was genuine, otherwise Jesus would not have gone to his house, nor would he have said, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.” This went down hard for the grumblers of verse 7 (most likely Pharisees), as they saw Jewish tax collectors as having forfeited their rights as Abraham’s offspring. But Jesus was not talking about genealogy. He was speaking of faith, the faith that makes all who believe, both Jew and Greek, descendants of Abraham (Romans 4:16).

We can gather from how Jesus responded to this man that Zaccheus made good on the money he stole, and showed true repentance by giving to the poor. He was genuine in his desire to deal with the sin that had produced guilt and a lack of joy in his life.

As we continue to love the brother and share the hope that is within us to others, we do well to remember our brother Zaccheus. A rich, short, seeking sinner who sincerely received the love of God through Jesus Christ. May the Spirit open our eyes to the unlikely candidates for salvation all around us. For so, once, were all of us.

At The Feet of Jesus

Text: Luke 10:38-42
38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
NIV

What should be the top priority in your life? Should it be Jesus? Certainly, without Jesus in your life, you have no eternal hope. Martha acknowledged Jesus as Lord. She opened her home to Him, yet Jesus said she didn’t get it. Agreeing that Jesus is real is not the #1 thing.
Perhaps serving the Lord should be #1. In our text, we find Martha serving the Lord. In fact, the text tells us that Martha was so busy serving the Lord, that she was distracted by all the preparations. Still Jesus said she didn’t get it. Early in my Christian life I was so delirious with joy over my new found faith, that I volunteered for just about every job at church.
Maybe the #1 thing is having a good heart. Some people have a philosophy that if you just have good intentions you’ll be alright. Look at Martha. Her motives are appropriate. She had good intentions. Her desire was to provide an excellent meal, and great hospitality. Still Jesus said she didn’t get it. Righteous motives, even when they are directed toward the Lord are not the #1 thing.

We see another possibility in our text. Is Justice the number one thing? Martha asked Jesus to do the fair thing and insist that Mary help her out. Still this wasn’t the number one thing. Equality and fairness misses the mark.

What is the number one thing? Look again at the text – verse 42, “but only one thing is needed.” The one thing is seen in verse 39, Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to what He is saying. Mary was busy about the one thing that really mattered, having a personal relationship with Christ. Jesus desires that we have a deep relationship with Him. He wants more than our Sunday morning get together. He wants you to know Him. This heart-to-heart relationship is the ONE thing He desires more than all of the other things.
True, it is important to believe in Jesus, but that’s not intimate enough. There are many people I’m acquainted with, but only a small few that I know personally.
It is important to serve the Lord. Without our service, James says our faith is dead. Yet sometimes we hide behind our service as a way from letting Jesus into the inner recesses of our life and heart.
We should have a good heart with the best of intentions as we live out our faith, but even our best intentions fall short of the glory of God.
Neither does our traditions and protocol measure up to the expectation of Christ.
What is the number one thing, a closer relationship with Jesus. As I mentioned this morning, we are to present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God. When we give ourselves to Him, then we accomplished the deeper purpose God has for our lives

Maybe

Maybe I should have stayed blinded

Now that I can see …I can see my true friends

When God answers your prayers and things have changed and so are you…..people began dislike you

People who used to tell you yes….now tell me know

Maybe just maybe I should have stayed blind

Maybe I should have stayed broke

Maybe I should have not went to school

After being blessed we began to walk into places where we have never walked before…

People who are walking with you aren’t ready to walk with you

Your blessings are hard on your friends

Some cases it was the friends that you needed but now since you are blessed….
They start to need you.

Sometimes God will use you to approach and bless people…..who don’t deserve you but they deserve Him…

What if God put your blessings in someone’s hands that can’t stand you.?

God blesses them…for them to bless you

Maybe I should have stayed blind…

Listen for the Whisper

Sometimes the preacher goes through a silent spell, when s/he has to wait for the voice of the Lord.  Today, my mind is reflecting on the journey of Elijah after gaining a great victory on Mt. Carmel against King Ahab and his 450 prophets of Baal.  While in the midst of a great depression, with Jezebel threatening to kill him within 24 hours, and feeling as if he was the only one, God ushered him to a cave where he waited to hear from God.

He experienced a windstorm, an earthquake, and a fire but yet did not hear the Lord in the midst of these.  I am learning that we sometimes go through situations where we cannot clearly hear God speaking so that we learn to pay attention to things we ordinarily would ignore or take for granted.  When Elijah heard God, he heard him in a soft whisper, not in the midst of the chaos he experienced.

Sometimes we go through periods of depression, distortion, and disappointment we must learn to listen for the whisper.  When we feel as though we are all alone and no one can relate to what we are feeling and thinking, we can find encouragement in the small whisper that reminds us that God will never leave us nor will He forsake us.  It is in these moments that we find strength to keep going when chaos has ripped apart our sanity because of the God we serve.  I wasn’t there with Elijah, but I can imagine when he heard this whisper he thought about how God fed him by the brook through a raven and gave him resources with a poor widow during a season of famine.

Father God, because You care for Your people and want all mankind to have life, You desire revival. Your revival brings life and nourishment, preservation and restoration. Thank You for sending Jesus to give us Your abundant life.

Lord, start revival in me first. I am Your servant and I place myself in position to receive revival. I feed on the Scriptures as a sheep feeds in green pastures because Your words are life to me. Holy Spirit of God, You raised Jesus from the dead and You dwell in me. So, I yield to You to energize my spirit, restore my soul and rejuvenate my mortal body. I renew my mind with Your Word. In my innermost being is a well of living water and I am revived!

Revival not only is life to me, but life to everyone who calls on the Name of The LORD. Therefore, I intercede on behalf of the people. I call upon You as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I call upon the mighty Name of Jesus. All of mankind needs life, Lord! All of mankind needs revival because it is life—Your life. I speak and sow seeds of revival everywhere I go. I send forth angels to reap the harvest of revival all over the world. I put my hand to the sickle to reap the rich harvest of revival in my home, my church, my community, in the marketplace, on the job, in my country and in all the world. Pour Yourself out on the people. Lord of the harvest, send forth laborers, positioning them in strategic places to minister as You pour out Your Spirit on all flesh. Almighty God, show Yourself mighty and strong with signs and wonders. Holy Spirit, breathe on all the people of the world. I pray this in the Name above all names, Jesus, aman

My Future Husband

Protect me, love me,  kiss me, hug me,  smile with me, laugh with me…..but don’t make me fall if you don’t plan on catching me.
I want you to truthful and honest about things that concerns our relationship. When we get comfortable that we keep our lines of kcommunication open. To love each other with all not part of your heart. That we will continue to love God first and all other He will provide. That we will love like its our last tome together, dance like no one watching and hug like we will fall if we let each other go. So, until God finish creating you . I will be waiting.

I want an old fashioned type of love

I want an old fashioned type of love.

A love where there are  no doubts, no insecurities and no fears.
When the term “till death do you part” meant exactly that.
When disagreements are only temporary but the make up process is so worth the fight.
When “divorce” isn’t an option and “forever” is the goal.

I want an old fashioned type of love.

I want to eat Sunday dinner with my husband after going to church service.
I want to go on family barbeques and be annoyed by the mosquitos and my childrens and his if he has any.

I want to leave my phone face up on the table and ask him to answer it if I’m busy.
I want to have date nights, where we use Netflix to watch boring chick flicks, because I’ll be looking forward to my reward.

I want to know fully the man who has my heart and I want him to know mine.

I want an old fashioned type of love.

But in order to have that, I know God has to send him.

I want an old fashioned type of love.

Pastor: I’m not shopping

..Im just talking ’bout what I’m talking ’bout.

In The Midst

Coldness
Stillness
Quietness
The breath of God do I hear.

The aroma of His presence
There’s a mist in the room
Crispness
Freshness

Light that shines through darkness
Nature’s pin light
Penetrate s through the coldness
The stillness of darkness

Wait, The Creator pulls back the curtain of darkness, glimpses the attention of all night presence.

Blackness turns into  brightness
Darkness turns into weakening power

Sleepiness into awaken power
The touch of mercy with head shake of grace

This creator enables this creature to open eyes
Stretch out the limbs  that reaches outward
The palm of the hand that can tell the story
Now, movement in the legs and feet
Where are we to thread upon today

Holy Spirit go with me as my guide
Come on, lead me to the place where I belongs

Eyes

As I gaze into your eyes,
Two stars brown and bold.
I can’t help but notice all the warmth you truly hold.
Through your eyes I see your soul.
Bare untouched and still whole.

Looking up into your eyes,
All my problems fade and fall away..
Looking up into your eyes,
Make me love you more and more each day.

Looking into your eyes I can see your every thought.
Telling me what every pain has brought.
Letting me know that you are letting the pain go.

There’s no crying beneath the skies,
There’s no hiding behind your eyes.
They tell your every feeling,
They scream them loud and ckear.
They tell me that you care
And you’ll always hold me near.

Staring into your eyes should be a crime,
‘Cuz the feeling it gives me on the inside.
So now as I said In this rhyme,
I’ll love you until the end of time..
